Correspondence & Visits

You should be able to keep and maintain your private and family relationships with the people outside the prison as normally as possible. You also have the right to correspond with your lawyer and state institutions without supervision.

Right to communicate

The prison administration has to ensure that you are given the opportunity to communicate with your family, friends, lawyer, doctor and other persons. Communication with the outside world includes sending letters, telegrams, making calls and having people visit you.

Restrictions

Your communication with persons outside the prison may only be restricted for security reasons. Whenever the prison administration limits your freedom to write or call people outside the prison or to meet with your family, there must be valid reasons for such limitations.

About this section

This section of the Guide will explain with whom, in what way and how often you should be allowed to communicate and what human rights might be affected in this regard.
