Language
The official language in criminal proceedings in Latvia is the Latvian language. However, you can request an interpreter if you don’t speak or understand it.
The Latvian language will be used in the trial. All court documents, including transcripts of hearings and judgment will also be prepared in Latvian.
If you do not speak or understand Latvian, you have a right to use a language that you do speak and understand at all stages of criminal proceedings. In such a case you may request an interpreter free of charge.
Interpreter
The interpreter can translate the proceedings in a language you understand, however, it does not necessarily have to be your mother tongue or a language you prefer.
example If you speak and understand English, but your mother tongue is French, your rights will not be violated if the interpretation is provided in English.
